FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Psychodynamic psychotherapy, sometimes called psychoanalytic psychotherapy, is about relationships, with yourself and others, both inside and out. It is about freedom and authenticity.

It helps you get to know yourself more honestly and broaden your emotional range and understanding. It enables you to take up a greater authority of yourself, making a more fulfilling life possible.

It is the most theoretically developed talking therapy, with a strong evidence base, and has influenced all other psychotherapy treatments.

Although psychodynamic psychotherapy is effective in alleviating symptoms such as anxiety and depression, crucially, it is an approach that looks to make sustained and deep change.

Registrations and membership of the British Psychoanalytic Council require practitioners to undergo rigorous training, ongoing supervision, and extensive personal analysis. It aligns with the highest training standards of the new shared framework for psychotherapy. Be sure to inquire about a person's experience and credentials when choosing a therapist.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

I offer an open, reliable, and confidential space where we can begin to understand and explore your mind. I work to offer an environment of deep and focused listening where we can come to understand the difficulties that may be hindering your development.

I may be interested in things that lie outside of your awareness, your dreams and early life, your relationships, past and present, and how they relate to your thoughts and feelings in the here and now with others and with me.

I invite and welcome any thoughts and feelings, critical feedback, and reflections at all stages of our work together.

Starting or even enquiring about psychotherapy can be daunting. You can read further about some common concerns here.

WHEN AND WHERE ARE SESSIONS?

Sessions would be at the same time each week for both open-ended therapy or shorter-term work.

This will be a space held for you each week, so missed sessions will be charged.

There are breaks in treatment. These are scheduled over conventional holiday periods. I give significant notice for this.

Sessions will take place in my consulting room located in Clapton Square, Hackney

I offer provision for phone and online sessions.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

You can email or text to arrange an initial free 15-minute consultation by telephone. If, after this, you wish to proceed, we can arrange an in-person consultation.

My standard fee is £100 for consultations and ongoing sessions. However, I operate a sliding scale and reserve limited spaces for students or those on low income, so please do ask about this and let me know your circumstances.

HOW LONG ARE SESSIONS?

Regular sessions are 50 minutes long and will be set at the same time once or twice each week.

To begin, I will offer an initial consultation where we will get to know something about what brings you to therapy and answer any questions you might have. It will also be a chance for you to get a feeling of what it would be like to work together.

It can sometimes take a few meetings to see if this treatment would be best for you. However, if after meeting it is felt that this approach might not be suitable, I can help think about who or what might be most appropriate.

DO YOU OFFER SHORT-TERM WORK?

Yes. I offer open ended psychotherapy as well as short-term work of 6-12 sessions if there is a specific issue you'd like to understand further or would like to work on.
